Upcoming Events:
March for Meals

Broward Meals on Wheels is hosting our annual March for Meals campaign in March. We invite civic minded individuals, community leaders and businesses to "tour" Meals on Wheels by delivering or serving meals for one day in March to experience first hand the need in their community and what they can do to help.

Throughout the month, participating restaurants will also be helping raise awareness about Meals on Wheels by proudly displaying information about the services and programs in their businesses and accepting donations from their patrons.

For more information or to join our campaign contact Colleen at 954-731-8770 ext 6927 or cbrown@bmow.org

Read to Feed Seniors

Each year Broward Schools are given the opportunity to participate in Read to Feed Seniors in the springs. The seven year old program offers students encouragement to read while giving them the opportunity to learn about the needs of seniors in their community and help.

This year, Broward Meals on Wheels are hoping to expand our school participation. Volunteers are needed to help contact and coordinate school programs. Call Colleen at 954-731-8770 ext 6927 for more information.

AMEX

Read to Feed Seniors is a joint project between Broward Meals on Wheels and Broward Elementary & Middle Schools to encourage students to read, teach youth about the needs of seniors in their community, and inspire them to Community Service throughout their lives.

Your class, school, or youth group can join hundreds of students during the coming school year to Read to Feed Seniors by calling 954-731-8770 ext 6927 for more information.

Download our current brochure for more information.

Participating Elementary & Middle Schools select from the following activities:

  • Mandatory! Presentation: Broward Meals on Wheels will work with each school’s faculty to create an age/school appropriate education campaign to teach their students about the needs and lives of the seniors in our community, Broward Meals on Wheels, and how their reading helps support the needs of our seniors.
  • Mandatory! Read-a-thon: Students will participate in a two-week read-a-thon. They collect donations from family and friends for each book or page read. (Schools in low-income areas can opt out of the fund-raising component of this activity, but still contribute their reading hours to the project.) All money raised provides meals for seniors in their cities. The time that students spend reading are considered community service hours.
  • Optional! Select Barnes and Noble stores will be holding a “Read to Feed Seniors Day” during the two-week time period. The day includes special guest readers and store discounts for students, parents, and customers. Stores will be donating proceeds to Broward Meals on Wheels and encouraging customers to donate books to participating schools!
  • Optional! Senior Pen Pals: Classes or groups that opt for this activity will be set up with a pen pal; a homebound senior in Broward County. This is an excellent way for students to practice the lost art of letter writing, make new friends, and benefit from the wisdom and experience of “the greatest generation!”
  • Optional! Penny Drive: This is the easiest way of making a difference. Encourage your students and classes to collect pennies, or any spare change, to purchase meals for a senior in need. Every coin and dollar collected helps provide a senior with breakfast and dinner!

High Schools students can participate too!

High School student volunteers are needed to help recruit and prepare participating Elementary and Middle Schools for the April Read to Feed Seniors Campaign. Students can expect to spend an average of three hours per week in February, March, and April. This is great leadership experience and public speaking training for college bound students! Call Colleen at 954-731-8770 ext 6927 to apply.
